What 906 Adventure Team does
Mission
To inspire youth to experience outdoor adventures through mountain biking and trails, with a focus on building self-esteem and strong minds, active healthy lifestyles, and trail stewardship.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Programs
Youth programs: adventure team: adventure bike club. Helping youth develop resilience, confidence, grit, and independence through cycling. The bike is a tool with which the kids explore the outdoor spaces within their communities-facing fear, overcoming obstacles, and learning how to leverage failure for self-improvement. We introduce kids to the idea that "doing hard things can be fund and rewarding." we help them develop a "growth mindset- and get them to embrace the "power of yet" - "so what if you can't do it, keep trying. Give your best effort every day." we work with kids age 5-17. The program is co-ed, featuring nearly a 50% split between boys and girls, and nearly the same ratio of men and women. All adventure teams develop a deep sense of community and connection to the other communities around the midwest - we're in this together. Youth are tomorrow's leaders, and we hope this program prepares them for that, as well as equips them and gives them the confidence to believe they can overcome anything life throws at them.

It encourages men, women and children to travel outside their comfort zone to create their best-self, where the purpose of the event is not winning, but finishing the race. To foster inclusivity and effect change within the sport, women are permitted to sign up even after the event is sold out. Doing so has encouraged more women to race and has resulted in over 25% of the field being female in a traditionally male dominated sport.

A goal of the event is to keep people excited, motivated and outdoors during a time of the year when seasonal depression becomes a battle for many. The polar roll was recognized as "event of the year" by the governor's fitness awards and has been deemed a signature event by the michigan fitness foundation. This event brings hundreds of people to marquette county every year to celebrate and promote active lifestyles.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2018, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2018, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2022 to 2023, from $654k to $1.6M (+145%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2020 6% · 2022 1% · 2023 3%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
24% of 906 ADVENTURE TEAM’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (83% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 5 funders, grant income rose $22k → $181k.
4 of 15 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 38% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of 906 ADVENTURE TEAM’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
906 ADVENTURE TEAM leans on a few funders — its largest provides 36% of grant income and the top three 74%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
97% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund 906 ADVENTURE TEAM.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 69% · 2019 67% · 2020 59% · 2021 99% · 2022 57% · 2023 83% — growing more concentrated.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
0% of 906 ADVENTURE TEAM's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 33% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
98% of 906 ADVENTURE TEAM's grant income comes from Michigan funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $161k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
