What Trident United Way does
Mission
Trident United Way is uniting the tri-county to uplift families out of poverty
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Community impactTrident United Way exists to strengthen working families across berkeley, charleston, and dorchester counties. Today, more than one-third of households in our region are alice (asset limited, income constrained, employed) - families who work hard yet still struggle to afford the basics due to rising housing costs, income volatility, and financial shocks. These include childcare workers, hospitality staff, medical assistants, teachers' aides, retail employees, and other frontline workers who keep our region running, yet remain one unexpected expense away from hardship. In 2025, Trident United Way established a bold goal: uplift 15,000 families out of poverty by 2035. Achieving this goal requires building a regional stability infrastructure that surrounds families with coordinated, human-centered support across multiple access points - workplaces, schools, housing communities, and neighborhood hubs. This strategy is delivered through the strong families, strong community initiative, which brings together:1) centers for strong familiescommunity-based hubs in moncks corner (500 s live oak dr, moncks corner, sc 29461) and summerville (133 east 1st north st, suite 3,…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2020 to 2021, from $19M to $21M (+11%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 3% · 2018 4% · 2019 4% · 2020 4% · 2021 11% · 2022 13% · 2023 7% · 2024 10% · 2025 5%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
89% of TRIDENT UNITED WAY’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (82% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 15 funders to 30 funders, grant income rose $202k → $688k.
18 of 64 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 56% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
Left out of every figure on this page: $4.4M from 14 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest United Way Association of South Carolina Inc). These are real filings, and they are not money TRIDENT UNITED WAY raised.
From the IRS filings of TRIDENT UNITED WAY’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 64 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
TRIDENT UNITED WAY has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 22% of grant income, and it takes 6 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 6 funders to its left
64% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund TRIDENT UNITED WAY.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 30% · 2018 24% · 2019 36% · 2020 25% · 2021 27% · 2022 23% · 2023 21% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
45% of TRIDENT UNITED WAY's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 70% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
56% of TRIDENT UNITED WAY's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $2.4M that is directly attributable, 77% of it comes from funders outside South Carolina, across 21 states.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $3.1M arriving through sponsors registered in 13 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
