What The New Harmony Project Inc does
Mission
The new harmony project is a national arts organization whose mission is to nurture writers in the development of scripts and new works that interrogate the complexity of hope. Through artist-centered programming, we care for writers so they can change the world.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
On its FY2024 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.
We launched playfest indy in fy25, and did our fundraising for the festival in fy24. The week-long festival of new play workshops and readings occurred in september. We also launched a new feedback program for our alumni playwrights.
Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).
From may 21-june 1, 2025, nhp held its annual writers' residency convening 25 writers at all stages of their careers in new harmony, indiana to research, write, and develop new scripts in an environment intentionally designed to foster creativity, reflection, and community. The community identified as 68% bipoc, 60% lgbtq+, 80% female or trans/gender non-conforming, and 4% parent artists. The 2025 residency also included two productions in residence, focused on plays already slated for production by partner theatres. One of these projects, the waterfall by phansia pharel, developed in partnership with thrown stone productions in connecticut, explores the tensions between a haitian-american mother and daughter navigating generational expectations, care, and cultural identity. The waterfall will receive a world premiere production off-broadway in 2026, in a co-production between thrown stone productions and wp theatre. Nhp also supported the development of emmy-nominated michael shayan's new play for my next trick. By supporting works like these, the new harmony project not only helps playwrights deepen their practice, but also contributes to the national pipeline of new plays that…

We continued the digital dinner program which brought alumni writers together throughout the year for informal conversations about the field. In 2025, we launched the dramaturgy feedback program which provided underwriting for 1:1 meetings between 20 alumni playwrights and professional freelance dramaturgs who could share essential responses to works in progress.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $334k to $143k (−57%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 14% · 2018 13% · 2019 14% · 2020 18% · 2021 23% · 2022 35% · 2023 17% · 2024 12% · 2025 6%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 8 funders, grant income rose $94k → $121k.
5 of 18 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 30% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is
THE NEW HARMONY PROJECT INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 36% of grant income and the top three 79%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
31% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE NEW HARMONY PROJECT INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 53% · 2018 52% · 2019 36% · 2020 63% · 2021 54% · 2022 51% · 2023 42% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
50% of THE NEW HARMONY PROJECT INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 72% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
96% of THE NEW HARMONY PROJECT INC's grant income comes from Indiana funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $375k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
