What National New Play Network Ltd does
Mission
The national new play network is the country's alliance of non-profit theatres that champions the development, production, and continued life of new plays.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Nnpn's flagship initiative, the national new play network rolling world premieres (rwp), supports three or more member theaters that choose to mount the same new play within an 18-month period. In this program, a playwright develops a new work with at least three different creative teams for at least three different communities of patrons, ensuring the resulting play is of the highest possible quality. Rwps may be made up of any combination of nnpn core and associate member theaters, with funding tiered accordingly. Funded projects receive up to $25,000 to be divided among the partner theaters, plus awards for the playwrights. Nnpn has supported more than 100 new plays and more than 325 productions to date.

To address the many different ways theater companies work together and with playwrights to develop and produce new work, the program has expanded over the years to fund collaborations between multiple theaters and collaborations between theaters and individual theater-makers.

More than 68,000 plays are currently included on the platform, which allows playwrights to share their work, readers to discover and recommend those plays, and organizations to access plays by writers that fit their specific needs. In 2025 a new type of subscription was added specifically for actors seeking monologues for auditions or classwork.

The showcase is produced by a member theater in a different city each year, and nnpn pays travel costs so that each core member has representatives in attendance. More than 120 plays have received showcase readings, and as of july 2018, 106 of them had received world premiere productions within the next two seasons, more than 80 of them at nnpn members.residency: for over a decade, nnpn's producer in residence program has supported season-long residences at nnpn core member theaters for those committed to furthering their career efforts toward the creation and production of new plays. While immersed in the day-to-day operations of their host theater, residents learn about nnpn's successful models for collaboration, deepen their connections to the artists and leaders of the network, and increase their visibility within the field.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $1.1M to $877k (−21%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2018 5% · 2019 8% · 2021 17% · 2022 9% · 2023 5%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
43% of NATIONAL NEW PLAY NETWORK LTD’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (63% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 5 funders, grant income rose $87k → $154k.
3 of 12 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 9% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is
NATIONAL NEW PLAY NETWORK LTD leans on a few funders — its largest provides 44% of grant income and the top three 89%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 98% · 2019 100% · 2020 99% · 2021 52% · 2022 42% · 2023 49% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
33% of NATIONAL NEW PLAY NETWORK LTD's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 67% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
NATIONAL NEW PLAY NETWORK LTD draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside Florida, across 5 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $136k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
