01What it does

What The Friends of Foundation Academy Inc does

Mission

The friends of foundation academies supports, enhances, and promotes the work of foundation academies by raising funds and delivering services, programs, and partnerships that equitably serve the best interests of our school community.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Under NJ law, charter schools may not build facilities with public funds. To expand and improve our high school facilities, the Friends of Foundation Academies purchased the neighboring vacant Holy Cross rectory site and spent the better part of the 2018-19 school year constructing a new 10,217 square foot addition in the city's south ward. The existing school building received a complete HVAC, electrical, and interior upgrade. The Friends of FA proudly owns and maintains the high school campus and leases it back to the school.

  2. Throughout college, there are several crucial moments that can put a student at risk of leaving school. The purpose of the Friends of Foundation Academy Knight Fund is to assist FAC alumni, currently enrolled in college or post-secondary institutions, in managing financial hardships that can hinder students from entering or persisting through their post-secondary schooling and careers. Through donations to the Friends of Foundation Academy, Inc, the Knight Fund provides awards, persistence grants and scholarships to deserving alumni.

  3. Funds raised by the Friends of FA help to fill the stark public funding gap between FA and our district counterparts. Support from donations to the Friends provides high-quality enrichment opportunities for students and drives the training, development, and celebration of our remarkable faculty.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 22 funders, grant income rose $500 → $511k.

15 of 41 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 54% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of The Friends of Foundation Academy Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 41 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

The Friends of Foundation Academy Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 16% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

59% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund The Friends of Foundation Academy Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

50% of The Friends of Foundation Academy Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 51% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

54% of The Friends of Foundation Academy Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $1.1M that is directly attributable, 90% of it comes from funders outside New Jersey, across 12 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 11 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
