01What it does

What Economic Security Project Action Inc does

Mission

Economic security project action advocates for ideas that build economic power for all americans. We aim to check corporate power, campion guaranteed income, and advocate for cash tax credits. To achieve this, our team disburses grants, runs issue campaigns, develops creative interventions and research products, and convenes the field to advance our issues and turn bold ideas into reality.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. A campaigns - our organization works to win cash tax credits at the federal and state level to deliver more money to people. This past year, we helped secure new or expanded child tax credits in states, putting money back in people's pockets. We also launched an affiliate in california, economic security california action (escaa) to reshape california's economic landscape by championing cash policies and challenging corporate consolidation. Escaa led the leading public campaign around ai legislation, co-sponsoring sb 1047, which would create a public option for computing power and put common sense safety guardrails in place.

  3. Build the field (btf) cash - we developed the blueprint for a guaranteed income, the ten-year vision to winning a guaranteed income, to the members of the guaranteed income community of practice. This led to the establishment of a cash coalition and strategic policy goals for achieving a guaranteed income. Building on our research around cash, we developed a strategy to educate and engage persuadable audiences around cash ideas.

  4. This was a year of big wins and big momentum, with huge wins on cash policies, expansion of the national movement for a guaranteed income, and antimonopoly action to shape markets to work for families. Over the course of this year, our events, workshops, and communities of practice have convened over 1,000 people, engaging frontline advocates, top officials in the white house, and long-time collaborators. We also expanded our footprint in both california and illinois, investing in them as the vanguard states in advancing bold economic policies.

2 of 6 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 12% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of ECONOMIC SECURITY PROJECT ACTION INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

ECONOMIC SECURITY PROJECT ACTION INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 50% of grant income and the top three 96%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund ECONOMIC SECURITY PROJECT ACTION INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $418k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
