What Slingshot Fund Inc does
Mission
Today, as we stand on the precipice of the largest transfer of generational wealth in history, slingshot has a bold vision: reimagining the future of jewish philanthropy. We are building a bolder, brighter jewish community by harnessing the ambition and passion of the next generation of jewish philanthropic leaders. And we are fostering game-changing partnerships that lay the foundation for forward-thinking, sustainable organizations.our mission is to mobilize young jewish philanthropists as funders and active change agents, who, with partners, shape the jewish community to be vibrant and continuously evolving. We have three main program offerings: the slingshot fellowship, board leadership training and matching and action circles.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
This is a leadership growth initiative, which develops the next generation of jewish philanthropic leaders to have a positive impact on jewish life. The fellowship is an 18-month transformative journey, that uses the fundamental principles of adaptive leadership to leverage our expertise in educating young jewish philanthropists to become full partners in shaping and leading a continually evolving, vibrant jewish life.
$121,560 spent28% of program spendingSlingshot supports the jewish community's thriving ecosystem by matching young jewish philanthropic leaders with meaningful board service on nonprofit boards. Through this program, we are supporting jewish nonprofits expand their next gen leadership and building towards long-term sustainability. The board matching program utilizes a high-touch approach akin to a concierge program that matches the individual and their skills/interests to the boards seeking their leadership. In addition, our newly reimagined board leadership lab provides support for those emerging leaders as they navigate their role as board members, which has become even more complicated. This is a critical step of slingshot's support of jewish life and innovation, as over half of our first cohort of fellows joined a jewish organization's board last year. We are seeing an uptick in interest in this work from jewish community organizations as well. These organizations are hiring slingshot to create customized programming to meet the growing needs of their communities.

Participants identify a problem, meet with experts, and learn about the issues before collectively deciding where to allocate funds for the greatest impact. This program not only educates our constituents on an issue, but it also moves philanthropic resources and connects like-minded funders.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2019 to 2020, from $783k to $1.2M (+54%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2021 14%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
91% of SLINGSHOT FUND INC’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (87% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 10 funders to 14 funders, grant income rose $106k → $283k.
9 of 36 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 39% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of SLINGSHOT FUND INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 36 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
SLINGSHOT FUND INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 25% of grant income, and it takes 6 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 6 funders to its left
40% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SLINGSHOT FUND INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 47% · 2018 36% · 2019 61% · 2020 30% · 2021 37% · 2022 17% · 2023 18% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
31% of SLINGSHOT FUND INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 47% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
SLINGSHOT FUND INC draws 84% of its grant income from funders outside New York, across 11 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $854k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
