What Samaritan's Purse does
Mission
Samaritan's Purse is a nondenominational evangelical christian organization providing spiritual and physical aid to hurting people around the world. Since 1970, Samaritan's Purse has helped meet the needs of people who are victims of war, poverty, natural disasters, disease, and famine with the purpose of sharing god's love through his son, jesus christ. The organization serves the church worldwide to promote the gospel of the lord jesus christ.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Operation christmas child (occ): Samaritan's Purse collects and delivers gift-filled shoeboxes to children around the world. We do this to demonstrate god's love, gain a hearing for the gospel, and share the true meaning of christmas-the birth of jesus christ, our lord and savior. Jesus told us, "go therefore and make disciples of all the nations" (matthew 28:19). In 2025, a total of 12.2 million shoebox gifts were prayerfully packed for boys and girls all over the world by people from 11 countries. Since 1993, more than 244 million shoebox gifts have been distributed in over 170 countries and territories. National collection week in 2026 will be nov. 16-23 at thousands of locations across the united states.

At the core of our ministry is the belief that mankind has been separated from god by sin, and our only hope of salvation comes from the atoning sacrifice of god's son, jesus christ. "if you confess with your mouth the lord jesus and believe in your heart that god has raised him from the dead, you will be saved" (romans 10:9). Many claim to behave mercifully toward their neighbors out of a sense of social consciousness. At Samaritan's Purse, we take our name and mandate from christ's instruction that we should first love the lord with our hearts, souls, minds, and strength. Caring for our neighbors then flows from our deep love for god. This command is illustrated in the parable of the good samaritan as told by jesus and recorded in luke 10:25-37 (new king james version): and behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tested him, saying, "teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?" he said to him, "what is written in the law? What is your reading of it?" so he answered and said, "'you shall love the lord your god with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind,-…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $1.8B to $2.6B (+42%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 4% · 2018 6% · 2019 6% · 2020 7% · 2021 5% · 2022 4% · 2023 4% · 2024 4% · 2025 4%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
94% of SAMARITAN'S PURSE’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (82% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 671 funders to 1216 funders, grant income rose $28M → $98M.
312 of 3716 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 70% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
Left out of every figure on this page: $103k from 2 payers (the payer's own filing calls it a related party, largest Amin Foundation). These are real filings, and they are not money SAMARITAN'S PURSE raised.
From the IRS filings of SAMARITAN'S PURSE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 3716 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
SAMARITAN'S PURSE has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 20% of grant income, and it takes 6 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 6 funders to its left
73% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SAMARITAN'S PURSE.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 30% · 2018 34% · 2019 26% · 2020 25% · 2021 28% · 2022 25% · 2023 19% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
64% of SAMARITAN'S PURSE's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 53% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
70% of SAMARITAN'S PURSE's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $210M that is directly attributable, 91% of it comes from funders outside North Carolina, across 50 states.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $494M arriving through sponsors registered in 44 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
