01What it does

What Saint Josephs Arts Foundation does

Mission

Saint Joseph's Arts Foundation (SJAF) supports the creation and presentation of contemporary art through local and national artist-in-residency programs, innovative partnerships with artists and arts organizations, and the presentation of exhibitions, performances, and public events that showcase art of all media and disciplines. At a time when unaffordable gallery and studio space, as well as housing, plagues artists throughout the United States, SJAF provides art exhibition spaces in both San Francisco, CA and Providence, MA, along with other support to artists. SJAF creates arts programming that inspires artists and the public to participate in cultural experiences, and promote the relevance of art and artists in the daily life of our society.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. In 2023, both the San Francisco and Provincetown locations fully re-emerged from the pandemic, offering a vibrant return to in-person programming. Each site hosted a range of exhibitions, film screenings, talks, and performances, welcoming both local and visiting audiences. Collaborations with partner organizations brought shared events, including public conversations and live dance performances, reinforcing SJAF's role as a hub for interdisciplinary arts. The year also saw the return of intimate gatherings with artists, authors, and designers - salon-style moments that fostered dialogue and creative exchange. In October, SJAF celebrated its five-year anniversary with a lively gala in San Francisco. Throughout 2023, SJAF expanded its membership, deepened community partnerships, and strengthened its presence in both cities. With a renewed focus on inclusive and bold programming, the Foundation continued to grow as a vital space for creative expression and cultural connection.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2021 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 9 funders, grant income fell $102k → $95k.

7 of 21 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 47% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SAINT JOSEPHS ARTS FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SAINT JOSEPHS ARTS FOUNDATION has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 19% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

47% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SAINT JOSEPHS ARTS FOUNDATION.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $233k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
