01What it does

What Renovare Inc does

Mission

To renew the Christian church through the personal and corporate spiritual formation of its members.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. A two year program, the Renovare Institute for Christian Spiritual Formation (Renovare Institute) provides an in depth interaction with core organizational ideas. Over the course of two years, students are guided in daily online studies, practice a variety of spiritual disciplines, develop a spiritual community with a small group of co-learners, and experience four week-long learning residencies in a retreat setting. In FY 2024-25, the Seattle cohort completed their first year of the program with a one-week in-person retreat in Sept 2024 and Feb 2025 with 45 students. The Omaha cohort completed its second year of the program with a one-week in-person retreat in Nov 2024 and June 2025 with 42 students.

  2. Conferences and retreats are planned and facilitated to encourage people to practice a meaningful spiritual life. In April 2025 the annual pastor's retreat, "First Love", was held for 43 pastors and ministry leaders. In June 2025, Renovare held its second biennial event, "The ReGathering," a 3-day event that is "part conference, part retreat, and part family reunion." It was attended in-person by approximately 370 people.

  3. Spiritual Formation education is a core of Renovare's ministry and remained an emphasis for FY 2024-25. This general education occurs through various platforms: such as podcasts via the website (renovare.org), the online Renovare book club with a record 2100 participants, and various speaking engagements. Renovare has continued webinars that were created in response to limited in-person gatherings. Three webinars were hosted in FY2024-25, with an average webinar having over 1,000 registrations. Renovare also hosted two online workshops - one on the art of kintsugi, and the other focused on how to hear God. Renovare continues to see people register for their free "From the Inside Out" online course. Over 9,300 people from 120 countries have registered for the course, podcast episodes were downloaded over 230,000 times and over 41,000 people now receive the "Renovare Weekly" email each Friday.

  4. To support renewal at a congregational level, Renovare offers resources and experiences for churches through its Churches in Renewal initiative. These include the Churches in Renewal Cohort Learning Experience (CIRCLE), participation at the annual pastors retreat, and other content and community life offerings. CIRCLE is an immersive ten-month program of study, prayer, and interchurch dialogue. In FY2024-25, seven Atlanta churches participated in CIRCLE. Three to five individuals from each church (total of 30 people) participated in the program. Cohort-wide in-person meetings were held on October 14, 2024, January 10, 2025, March 17, 2025 and May 9, 2025.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 12 funders, grant income rose $106k → $1.5M.

13 of 21 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 64% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Renovare Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Renovare Inc leans on a few funders — its largest provides 35% of grant income and the top three 75%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

64% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Renovare Inc.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 80% · 2018 63% · 2019 60% · 2020 64% · 2021 78% · 2022 44% · 2023 81% — broadly stable.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

67% of Renovare Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 81% give in more than one year at all.

first grant+1y+2y+3y+4y+5y+6y

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

64% of Renovare Inc's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $1.3M that is directly attributable, 99% of it comes from funders outside Illinois, across 7 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
