01What it does

What Relief Nursery Inc does

Mission

Relief nursery prevents the cycle of child abuse and neglect through early intervention that focuses on building successful and resilient children, strengthening parents, and preserving families.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Therapeutic early childhood program provides a unique combination of individualized classroom and home-based developmental experiences for children newborn to six years of age. All aspects of the program focus on the specific issues of children from multi-stressed families who have experienced trauma, abuse, and/or stress, or are at risk for such experiences. Multiple features contribute to the therapeutic nature of this program and its effectiveness in preventing child abuse and neglect. The curriculum and environment provided at relief nursery support the individual needs of each child. Teachers, specialists, and parents work together to establish individual goals for each child. The therapeutic classroom is part of a larger system providing comprehensive, ameliorating services to both child and family. To provide continuity between school and home, the child's classroom teacher is also the family's home visitor, helping to enhance parenting skills, promoting parent-child relationships, and creating a healthy and nurturing home environment. In this program, the focus is on the social and emotional development. There is a low ratio of adults to children in the classrooms.

  2. Accessing success is a substance use disorder recovery support program for parents participating in other relief nursery programs. Accessing success provides peer support, parent for recovery support group and social skills activities to support parents in achieving and maintaining recovery. A unique aspect of accessing success is that it is staffed by peer support interventionists who are in recovery themselves, to provide mentoring and support for parents. The parents for recovery support group includes transportation, childcare and a light meal for parent and child.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 18 funders to 31 funders, grant income rose $644k → $841k.

11 of 63 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 35% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of RELIEF NURSERY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 63 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

RELIEF NURSERY INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 23% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

66% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund RELIEF NURSERY INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

54% of RELIEF NURSERY INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 67% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $2.2M arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
