What Pa Cleanways of Allegheny County Inc does

Mission

To engage and empower people to eliminate illegal dumping and littering in allegheny county

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Land program: acw empowers people to eliminate illegal dumpsites and empower residents to address litter and future dumping issues. Activities include dumpbusters, wherein crews of staff and volunteers clean up thousands of illegal dumpsites across the county. The stepkeeper program engages volunteers to regularly clean litter from urban stairways, promoting safer, more accessible pedestrian infrastructure. Acw also hosts bulk-item disposal events, large group litter cleanups, and distributes litter kits to facilitate individual stewardship.

  2. Water program: acw's key water-based program is the tireless project, aimed at getting residents engaged with local rivers and streams by cleaning up debris that accumulates along the shorelines. Using acw's 28-ft pontoon boat, the rachel carson; 30-ft jon boat, the knb; and 36-ft pontoon barge, the plastic magnet 1, acw's team works with volunteers to remove trash and educate them about issues affecting the county's waterways. Acw's gratekeepers program stewards volunteers who adopt and keep storm drains free of litter and other debris before ending up in local waterways.

  3. Education and outreach: acw strives to educate people about the impacts of illegal dumping and littering in an effort to encourage lifelong behavior and attitude changes. The primary avenues for education and outreach include waste management and watershed education, service learning, tabling events, social media, monthly newsletters, speaking engagements, and media appearances. In partnership with pennsylvania resources council, acw also runs eco scouts, a summer program that engages community cohorts in environmental education on waste systems and circularity.

  4. Research and advocacyby identifying dump sites and researching best practices, the organization gains critical information that helps serve the region better. Research has included studies that look at dumping patterns in pittsburgh; the amount and distribution of illegal dumpsites in allegheny county; and the amount, weight, and characteristics of all trash collected during three days of cleanups. These studies have provided critical information that the organization has used to educate the public, determine programs and services to offer, and suggest policy changes that will help reduce litter and illegal dumping.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $68k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
