What Otsego 2000 Inc does

Mission

Otsego 2000 celebrates, protects, and enhances the environmental, agricultural, cultural, scenic, and historic significance of the greater otsego lake region. As a 'first responder' on environmental, sustainability, and community issues that affect the region's quality of life, otsego 2000 endeavors to ensure healthy environmental and economic futures for present and coming generations through informed advocacy, public education, innovative projects, and ideas for economic advancement.

Programs

  1. Environmental defense and stewardship: otsego 2000's work in environmental defense and stewardship embodies its role of first responder for the region whenever an environmental threat emerges. Thus, eds program priorities are generally dictated by outside factors and are reactive to the extent that, as soon as a possible threat to the region's air, water, lands or the otsego lake viewshed is perceived, otsego 2000 conducts the necessary research to determine the extent of the threat and how best to combat it. Through research, public outreach, participation in the public project planning process and education of elected officials and voters, otsego 2000 applies all its resources to ensure that the otsego lake region is protected.

  2. Sustainable economic development: otsego 2000 believes that the overall environmental and economic health of the otsego lake region depends heavily on a diverse, sustainable, year-round economy that emphasizes sustainable agriculture and a robust regional food system, a vibrant year-round cultural life, and significantly increasing the profile of the region as a destination for heritage tourists and outdoor enthusiasts. To that end, otsego 2000 has taken the lead over the years in developing programs and initiatives that contribute materially to the local economy and substantially improve the quality of life in the region. These include the cooperstown farmers' market, glimmerglass film days, and www.otsegooutdoors.org.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 8 funders, grant income rose $91k → $115k.

6 of 17 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 7% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of OTSEGO 2000 INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

OTSEGO 2000 INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 78% of grant income and the top three 89%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

87% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund OTSEGO 2000 INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

67% of OTSEGO 2000 INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 76% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $66k arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
