01What it does

What Operadelaware Inc does

Mission

Operadelaware is a professional non-profit opera company with a reputation for excellence in both opera and arts education. Operadelaware opens the door to bold, vibrant and creative operatic programming that enriches the community, transforms audiences, and encourages dialogue.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The 2024-2025 season saw continued growth in audience reach and community presence. This season, operadelaware enriched the lives of over 24,000 people through performing or presenting over 150 operatic performances, lectures, events, and youth education sessions throughout delaware and the mid-atlantic region. The 2024-2025 season attracted over 1,500 first-time patrons, as well as over 650 patrons from outside a 30-mile radius of wilmington. In addition, our riverfront studios served as home to many delaware arts organizations for office, rehearsal, performance, and event space.

  2. Operadelaware's education and outreach programs reached underserved community centers and schools through a multi-pronged approach that provides students with instruction, training, presentations and performance opportunities. The curriculum, repertoire, and rehearsal time are closely tailored to the specific needs of each student body. The participation- based programs integrate the arts into curriculum as a way to reach a variety of learning styles. The 2024-2025 season saw a continuation of the neighborhood choir program and the launch of a new in-school education program led by operadelaware company artists, generating over 5,000 student interactions. These in- and after-school programs are geared towards young audiences and introduce children to the power and beauty of the unamplified human voice, while teaching important lessons about reading, writing, and music.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 11 funders, grant income rose $113k → $216k.

6 of 23 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 27% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of OPERADELAWARE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

OPERADELAWARE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 30% of grant income and the top three 70%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

28% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund OPERADELAWARE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $523k arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
