01What it does

What New York Genome Center Inc does

Mission

Operate a state-of-the-art, world-class genomic research center that creates and uses advanced genomics to understand the genetic basis of disease. For more information, see schedule o.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Genome sequencing: the new york genome center (nygc) has one of new york's largest and most advanced whole genome sequencing programs, having sequenced over 106,885 whole genome samples to date. Nygc's two state-of-the-art illumina novaseq x systems sequencers are each capable of sequencing 20,000 human genomes annually. This state-of-the-art sequencing technology enables nygc to conduct large-scale genomics projects with great speed and sample volumes, and to explore the genome in more depth with greater efficiency. In addition, nygc operates an oxford nanopore promethion sequencer for long read sequencing, and a high-throughput sequencer from ultima genomics (the ug100). See schedule o.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 20 funders, grant income rose $3.2M → $46M.

10 of 46 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 8% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $13M from 4 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Jewish Communal Fund). These are real filings, and they are not money NEW YORK GENOME CENTER INC raised.

From the IRS filings of NEW YORK GENOME CENTER INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 46 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $16M arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
