Mission

The new jersey ymca state alliance (njysa) is a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit organization comprised of 30 member associations collectively serving children and adults through advocacy, collaboration and statewide initiatives. Njysa fosters a greater ability for new jersey ymcas and community partners to positively impact and serve more families, and advance health equity through policy, systems, and environmental change. For over 150 years, our collective voice strengthens local communities to promote youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The ymca new jersey youth and government (nj yag) program holds a two-and-a-half-day legislative simulation where students debate bills that they have written, forge new friendships and gain a deeper sense of civic awareness. Students in ymca nj yag get to put their skills to the test and learn through experience and first hand participation as senators, assemblymen, justices, lobbyists, and members of the media in our legislative simulation. Students are able to address issues by writing, debating, and passing legislation. Through our program, students are also guided through positive youth and character development activities. The conference is guided by the ymca four core values--caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, which guides the students' approach to leadership roles and conference planning. Each weekend includes a community service project designed to build a theme and foster the tone of service to others for every participant. Ymca new jersey youth and government aims to show all its participants that they can make a difference by being civically engaged in their communities on a state or national level.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $5k → $115k.

2 of 14 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 33% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of NEW JERSEY YMCA STATE ALLIANCE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

NEW JERSEY YMCA STATE ALLIANCE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 28% of grant income and the top three 62%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

65% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund NEW JERSEY YMCA STATE ALLIANCE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $375k arriving through sponsors registered in 1 state is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
