What Music of Remembrance does
Mission
Music of Remembrance (mor) is a seattle-based performing arts organization dedicated to addressing questions of human rights and social justice through the transformative power of music. Established in 1998 with the mission to ensure that the voices of witness to the holocaust be heard, its vision has evolved to explore the resilience of all who have been persecuted or excluded for their faith, ethnicity, gender or sexuality. Over the years, it has demonstrated itself to be a powerful creative catalyst for "testimonies for tomorrow" - persuasive musical works that explore the consequences of intolerance toward the other.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.
Program
Mor produced four major concerts during its 27th season: four programs on our mainstage at seattle's benaroya hall and one in san francisco. Additionally, we continued our online programming of past programs that we offered free of charge. Our opening concert on october 27, 2024, titled "peace imagined," featured two works by afghan-born composer milad yousufi, which reflect a message of hope amid a world of conflict and a refugee's longing for home. On january 27, mor produced our annual "art from ashes" concert marking international holocaust remembrance day (continued)and the 80th anniversary of auschwitz's liberation. This free, sold-out program showcased music created within ghettos and concentration camps, bringing together generations of artists, including the northwest boychoir, seattle girls choir, a young mor award recipient, and ensemble players from the seattle symphony. On march 16, we presented "identity," exploring identities under existential threat. The program featured two world premieres commissioned by mor, including "tribulations" by acclaimed portuguese composer luis tinoco, recipient of portugal's prestigious 2024 pessoa prize. This work, for soprano and…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2021 to 2022, from $543k to $1.5M (+174%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2017 4% · 2018 10% · 2019 10% · 2020 3% · 2021 6% · 2022 5% · 2023 6% · 2024 8%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
88% of MUSIC OF REMEMBRANCE’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (64% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 10 funders, grant income rose $50k → $186k.
5 of 19 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 16% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

How concentrated its funding is
MUSIC OF REMEMBRANCE has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 29% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 30% · 2018 41% · 2019 26% · 2020 50% · 2021 19% · 2022 44% · 2023 27% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
64% of MUSIC OF REMEMBRANCE's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 58% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
69% of MUSIC OF REMEMBRANCE's grant income comes from Washington funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $171k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
