01What it does

What Moses - Wisdom of Madison Inc does

Mission

Moses is a coalition of faith communities, organizations and individuals sharing a passion for justice, a commitment to community, and a practice of hope. It exists to deepen relationships within and among faith communities; and to empower people to act together for justice in pursuit of their individual and collective values. Moses, as a local organization within the state organization wisdom, inc., is organized to further its purpose by: 1. Increasing the capacity for grassroots leadership to bring about systemic change through ongoing training, education, advocacy, and fundraising. 2. Expanding the scope of influence of each member through creation of a local faith-led organization. 3. Identifying potential leaders among members for training on local, regional, and state issue development and related action strategies. 4. Engaging members in local, regional, and statewide issues campaigns.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Justice system reform initiative (jsri) 2024 highlights: jail consolidation project moves forward. On jan. 18, 2024 , final funding was approved for the jail project to proceed. Although the jail will be larger than we wanted, it is smaller than originally proposed and comes with renewed commitment to reforms that will keep more people out of jail and out of the criminal-legal system. The challenge now is to make sure that the new jail lives up to the promised improvements. We continue to advocate for improvements that can be made both before and after the jail consolidation project is complete. Jsri also meets with newly elected and appointed individuals, to gain understanding and to develop relationships. These include: the implementation of a crisis/triage center will both help to keep people out of the criminal-legal system and be an important resource for individuals who are having a mental health crisis; the community alternative response emergency services (cares) program in madison and now expanded to sun prairie. Cares provides a non-law-enforcement response to a variety of needs, including mental health crises; and a new initiative, to be managed by the office of justice…

  2. Racial justice for all children task force (rjac) and education advocacy group (eag): in coordination with the madison metropolitan school district (mmsd)'s proposed investment of almost $2 million to provide 20 teachers at the k-1 level to reduce class sizes, rjac's education advocacy group is connecting with partners to implement strategies for advocating on behalf of the district's literacy efforts. In the summer of 2023, eag worked to support the adoption of legislation that is now called act 20, right to read bill. Since then, eag has been in communication with both school district leaders and officials to help ensure that they are following act 20's requirements. We are optimistic for improved reading proficiency in our state, while we also know that there is much work to be done. Finally, the housing group (hg) participated in a successful effort to have the state supreme court shorten the record-retention period for eviction cases in which no money judgment is entered from 20 years to two. Throughout 2024, the hg continued to discern how best to respond to local housing issues, including the challenges of advocacy for affordable housing.

  3. Moses strongly supports the abolition of solitary confinement in the justice system. On april 23, 2024, over 70 attendees in a packed meeting room in the state capitol heard a powerful series of speakers on the inhumane practice of solitary confinement in wisconsin prisons and jails. Among the 70-plus listeners were five legislators and 10 aides; on the panel were six people who had spent time in solitary, four clergy, and a woman who had recently lost her father to suicide in solitary. Wisdom arranged for informational packets to be delivered to all legislators' offices after the event.

  4. Other notable learning advocacy events and organizational growth: lunch and learn fundraiser celebrates madison's new safe house. On may 15, 2024 moses members and others gathered for a "lunch and learn" fundraiser at lake edge lutheran church in monona. We were there to hear expo member delilah mckinney speak about the special problems of women who spend time in prison, what they need to succeed after release, and how she obtained a grant for a safe house that helps them move toward new lives. "end the lockdowns," a community forum at first unitarian society on feb. 1, 2024, presented dramatic testimony about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in wisconsin's overcrowded prisons. Personal stories were added by family members whose incarcerated loved ones had died or been severely injured as a result of abuse or neglect by prison staff. The take-away message from the forum was to keep lobbying and keep educating more and more voters about the needed changes. Finally, moses pursues deeper involvement by local african american churches. To that end, moses president saundra brown arranged visits by small moses groups to four different african american churches. Each visiting moses group…
