01What it does

What Medic Mobile Inc does

Mission

Medic designs, delivers, and supports world-class, open-source software for health workers providing care in the world's hardest-to-reach communities. We believe providing communities with sophisticated, human-centered technology is an effective tool to ensure universal health coverage is a reality for all.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2024 return the organization reported a significant change in how it conducts a program.

In early 2024, following the conclusion of multiple grant-funded research activities, medic discontinued its dedicated research function and implemented a corresponding reduction in research staff. Remaining research capacity was reorganized and merged with the programs function to ensure continuity of ongoing deliverables and support for emerging programmatic priorities.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 3).

  1. The organization designs, delivers, and supports software that helps community health workers, managers, and clinical teams work together to provide care. The organization's tools support health workers across the globe. The organization works with more than 100 partners to deliver its technology toolkit to health workers, and also distributes a free, self-service version of its software and training resources. Medic serves as the technical steward and a core contributor for the community health toolkit (cht), a global public good that supports health workers as they deliver care in reimagined health systems. The cht includes a collection of open-source software frameworks and applications, with resources to help partners design and deploy digital tools for care teams with the support of an active community of collaborators.

  2. Digital tools: we believe creating and supporting open-source projects promotes accountability, encourages local ownership and adaptation, and supports standards that enable collaboration and efficient data-sharing. We work in solidarity with technical organizations, governments, and ngos to harness these tools for care coordination, health workforce performance management, and wider health systems strengthening.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 10 funders to 12 funders, grant income rose $2.5M → $9.9M.

13 of 40 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 39% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MEDIC MOBILE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 40 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MEDIC MOBILE INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 16% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

61% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MEDIC MOBILE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

45% of MEDIC MOBILE INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 70% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $14M arriving through sponsors registered in 9 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
