01What it does

What Market Project Inc does

Mission

To build sustainable businesses and create workplaces that are transformative and dignity-affirming for survivors of complex trauma. Survivors often struggle to find sustainable employment. We work with survivors to build thriving businesses that foster healing.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Sustainable work we create transformative and dignity-affirming jobs in market-based businesses for survivors of trauma, exploitation, and trafficking. These jobs build skills and promote flourishing in community to advance the survivor's healing journey. We also provide job-related training in areas such as sales, production and employee rights. In 2025, we registered a new business in northern uganda and began startup, including market research, product development and identification of supply chains. This is a region that experienced high levels of trauma during the 20 years of conflict between the lra and ugandan authorities and today hosts an estimated one million refugees from south sudan and congo. The region also is experiencing high population growth, including youth desperate for jobs and to earn a living.

  2. Trauma healingwe offer holistic trauma training and care within the workplace. We train managers to understand the impact of trauma and adopt trauma-informed leadership practices. In partnership with trained nationals, we facilitate voluntary, 16-week trauma healing groups for employees. Mentors walk with survivors to further their healing journey. In 2025, we trained 19 community leaders in trauma healing program that has been provided to more than 200 men and women in a region that has experienced high levels of trauma, as well as ongoing engagement in a supportive community.

  3. Building supportive communityrecognizing that healing takes place in community and in relationship with others, we strive to create genuine community-spaces of safety, remembrance, and reconnection. We support a community-based network that provides most basic food supplies to 200 families each month while offering participation in our trauma healing program. In our new business, we will provide a supportive work culture that encourages mutual respect, healthy dialogue and teamwork. Workers learn teamwork, build trust, and gain agency and voice. Workers typically share up to 25% of their earnings to support immediate and extended family.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 4 funders, grant income rose $6k → $151k.

4 of 10 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 27% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of MARKET PROJECT INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

MARKET PROJECT INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 58% of grant income and the top three 81%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

33% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund MARKET PROJECT INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

43% of MARKET PROJECT INC's funders are still giving 1 year after their first grant; 70% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $84k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
