01What it does

What Light Collective does

Mission

Creating a hope-oriented community where families who have a child with cancer can build resilience and share delight.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Matchbox Program: Every month, TLC hosts a virtual family fun day for families across the Pacific NorthWest who have a child with cancer (on active treatment, or within one year of finishing active treatment). Matchbox Days include a big box of games, activities, snacks, and crafts delivered to each family's door, three opportunities to gather on Zoom (crafts, family games, and a parent and caregiver connection time), and a family dinner via DoorDash voucher. In 2024 we hosted 11 Matchbox Days, delivering a total of 917 boxes, and serving over 200 families across 5 states. The objective of our Matchbox Days is to provide a regular opportunity for families to turn toward one another in their homes and make happy memories together, and also connect with other families who are experiencing childhood cancer. We also hosted three in-person gatherings for families, which included a picnic lunch, family relay games, a carnival, and a special parent gathering. At these gatherings, we served 212 participants and welcomed 157 volunteers. Finally, we hosted two fundraiser events: a springtime Bingo event at a local brewery, and a formal dinner gala in November. We surpassed our fundraising…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2021 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 4 funders, grant income rose $16k → $38k.

5 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 100% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Light Collective’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Light Collective leans on a few funders — its largest provides 45% of grant income and the top three 95%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

100% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Light Collective.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2021 63% · 2022 70% · 2023 58% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

Where its funders are

100% of Light Collective's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Too little is directly attributable to place on a map.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $232k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
