What Just Futures Law Inc does

Mission

Just futures law, inc. (the "charity") was founded to advance respect for human and civil rights by litigating to defend the rights of people secured by law, educating the public about human and civil rights violations, and providing a home for lawyers working to improve conditions for people who are experiencing and/or being threatened by unjust criminalization, detention, and deportation practices in the united states. The charity's approach centers the leadership and lived experience of people whose human and civil rights have been violated by american criminal justice and immigration enforcement systems. The charity works in partnership with immigrant and racial justice organizers to develop legal and advocacy strategies aimed at preventing the criminalization, detention, and deportation of immigrants and people of color in the united states, to file legal cases that defend human and civil rights secured by law and challenge threats to those rights, and to educate the public about

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. Just futures law defends and builds the power of immigrants' rights and criminal justice activists, organizers, and community groups working to defend against deportation and mass incarceration systems. This includes cutting-edge work around the technology and surveillance tools used to further deportation. A defining principle of jfl is that policy advocacy and litigation must be designed and executed with community and organizing groups.

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 10 funders, grant income rose $373k → $1.2M.

8 of 19 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 18% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of JUST FUTURES LAW INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 18 of 19 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

JUST FUTURES LAW INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 19% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

39% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund JUST FUTURES LAW INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. 67% of JUST FUTURES LAW INC's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 58% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.4M arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
