01What it does

What Hebrew Free Loan Society Inc does

Mission

The hebrew free loan society (hfls) fosters economic stability and opportunity for lower-income new yorkers through interest-free lending. Hfls loans make an immediate, concrete difference in the lives of our borrowers, enabling them to invest in their education, start a business, build a family and meet emergency expenses. Hfls is non-sectarian; our borrowers represent new york's diverse jewish and non-jewish communities. Since its founding in 1892 hfls has provided over $300 million in loans to more than 875,000 borrowers while maintaining a repayment rate of 99%. As hfls loans are repaid, the capital is lent out again and again, helping more people and multiplying the impact over time.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

The hebrew free loan society (hfls) advances economic stability and opportunity for lower-income new yorkers within and beyond the jewish community by making safe, affordable interest-free loans. Hfls provides 0%-interest loans to assist low and moderate-income households who are struggling to manage spikes in expenses, dips in income, and other financial challenges. Hfls loans help lower-income individuals and families pay for college, graduate school, or professional training; manage medical and dental expenses; afford moving costs and security deposits; consolidate and reduce high-interest debt; start or expand a small business; access expensive special education services for their special needs children; pay immigration and legal fees; and more. At end of fy25, hfls had 4,490 loans outstanding totaling $39.9 million; in fy25 alone, hfls disbursed 1,813 loans totaling more than $31 million.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 22 funders to 47 funders, grant income rose $740k → $3.3M.

17 of 124 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 42% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of HEBREW FREE LOAN SOCIETY INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 124 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

HEBREW FREE LOAN SOCIETY INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 21% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

63% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund HEBREW FREE LOAN SOCIETY INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $9.9M arriving through sponsors registered in 12 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
