What Haywood Street Community Development does

Mission

Dignity through dwellings, connection through community.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. In 2025, HSCDs primary focus was on the construction of our 41-unit Affordable Housing Community. While construction began in 2024, post-Hurricane Helene brought forth needed changes, for instance, the purchase and installation of a generator. Additionally, HSCD raised funds to purchase and install washer and dryer appliances for each unit. We engaged with our community and held construction gatherings to continue to raise awareness and anticipation.

  2. HSCD Board of Directors chose a name for the West Haywood Street Apartments, choosing a matriarch of the WECAN Community (West End Clingman Avenue Neighborhood), Gloria Howard Free lovingly known as Lady Gloria. While construction was delayed HSCD moved forward and held our Building Consecration in late fall of 2025.

  3. Additionally, looking forward to possible future development HSCD went under contract for the purchase of land located at 131 McDowell Street, Asheville with Duke Energy. By the end of 2025 HSCD was in the due diligence period and evaluating the land.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $364k arriving through sponsors registered in 6 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
