What Emmanuel Music Inc does

Mission

Emmanuel music engages with audiences and musicians to explore the enduring questions of our shared human experience, building on our core commitment to the music of j.s. Bach. Expanding on a 55-year plus tradition of weekly bach cantatas in a liturgical setting, we perform concert repertoire from baroque to contemporary in large and small ensembles, inviting audiences to explore and discover familiar and unfamiliar masterworks. The commitment and discipline of performing together more than 50 times a year nurtures a core of established and emerging musicians and fosters unparalleled artistic excellence. In our outreach we are committed to training the next generation of musicians, mentoring young students, and inspiring broad audiences in free concerts, lectures, and master classes.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Emmanuel music, deeply committed to the enduring legacy of j.s. Bach continues to impact its audience and musicians through a blend of performance, scholarship, and community engagement. The 2024/2025 season exemplified this with our foundational and ongoing cantata series, which presents a different bach cantata each sunday as part of the worship service at emmanuel epsicopal church. The series offers free in-person and livestreamed access, and includes premieres of new works through our motet commissioning project. The lindsey chapel series provided six free noontime performances by solo musicians, including the complete english suites for keyboard by bach. In 2024-2025, emmanuel music also continued critical community engagement with our partners at the boston public library, boston arts academy, and project step. In addition, we offered numerous public lectures, discussions, and performances held as part of our bach institute january intensive young artist program. This multifaceted programming approach spanning regular liturgical performances, a dedicatedmainstage concert series, educational initiatives, and access to online intellectual resources through our bach notes and…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 5 funders to 9 funders, grant income rose $135k → $330k.

7 of 23 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 81% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of EMMANUEL MUSIC INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

EMMANUEL MUSIC INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 38% of grant income and the top three 85%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

81% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund EMMANUEL MUSIC INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

56% of EMMANUEL MUSIC INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 61% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

81% of EMMANUEL MUSIC INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $753k that is directly attributable, 86% of it comes from Massachusetts funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $3.1M arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
