What Edceptional Inc does

Mission

Edceptional was created to help expand the number of high-quality k - 12 public education seats for all low-income children living in the city of rochester, ny, regardless of school type, charter or district. The mission includes strengthening and growing the charter school sector in rochester and supporting charter schools that have the leadership and model needed to be successful. Edceptional supports all local charter schools by operating a charter school application and information web site (goodschoolsroc.org) where parents can view all rochester area charter schools and apply to those of their choice. Edceptional also facilitates collaboration and sharing of best practices among the rochester charter schools, with an emphasis on leadership development at the board level and school management team level, as well as understanding the importance of a positive, enabling school culture. An important emphasis is to provide coaching to school leaders and teachers to implement literacy programs based on recent neurological research on how the brain learns to read. Such programs have proven successful in raising the percentage of students reading at grade level by double digit…

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. A. Edceptional operates, maintains, and promotes a website, goodschoolsroc.org, that provides a portal for city parents to view and learn about 27 charter school locations in rochester and then submit a single online application to one or more schools of their choice. This has resulted in a substantial increase in applications to charter schools while leading the charter schools to work more closely together. It has also raised the visibility of the charter school section now edcuating nearly one third of the city's public-school students. B. Edceptional operates a literacy initiative for charter schools, providing expert coaches to train teachers on how to teach reading and writing consistent with the science of reading. Coaching also extends to how to observe classrooms and provide useful feedback to teachers to improve their pedagogy, how to collect and analyse data on student progress to pinpoint gaps in learning and focus teaching on eliminating those gaps through extra instruction, implementing better curricula and schedules, etc. This program has resulted in double digit improvements in student performance. C. Edceptional provides coaching to school leadership teams and…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 8 funders, grant income rose $401k → $500k.

4 of 19 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 20% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of EDCEPTIONAL INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

EDCEPTIONAL INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 47% of grant income and the top three 79%; half comes from just 2 funders.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $755k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
