01What it does

What Companions on a Journey Grief Support does

Mission

Companions on a Journey Grief Support (coj) provides ongoing support to the bereaved of all ages, surrounding them with hope, strength, and healing as they create their new life balance.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. School-based grief support program for k-12: coj's school-based grief support program helps transform schools into grief-informed spaces where students can process complicated feelings of grief and loss, connect with a caring community, and build a toolbox of critical wellness and resiliency skills. In 2024 coj partnered with 65 public, private, and parochial schools to provide monthly grief support. Coj facilitated 97 school groups, and also provided consultation and education for staff and caregivers. Crisis response was provided in 18 schools, supporting 891 students. Coj works alongside administrators and counselors to build a grief-sensitive culture where bereaved students and staff feel loved, accepted, and supported. Monthly school-based groups are co-facilitated by a coj bereavement specialist and the school counselor. They are supported by coj social work interns that provide added mentorship for student support.

  2. Family and community programs: include "mending hearts for grieving families," a monthly program for grieving children, teens and families, as well as "pathway to healing" events and family support groups. These programs and events seek to restore family balance--one child, one teen, and one family at a time. Coj believes a family that grieves together, heals together. We engage in activities and conversations that allow not only individual family members to experience healing, but the entire family. Programs offer a safe and nurturing environment for all ages to honor loved ones, strengthen family bonds, and find hope. In 2024, coj's mending hearts families met for 9 sessions and the pathway to healing events served 79 children, teens, and adults.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 10 funders, grant income rose $7k → $129k.

10 of 16 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 35% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of COMPANIONS ON A JOURNEY GRIEF SUPPORT’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

COMPANIONS ON A JOURNEY GRIEF SUPPORT leans on a few funders — its largest provides 40% of grant income and the top three 66%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

75% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund COMPANIONS ON A JOURNEY GRIEF SUPPORT.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $205k arriving through sponsors registered in 8 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
