01What it does

What Carolina Youth Action Project does

Mission

Carolina Youth Action Project is a grassroots nonprofit that uses music as a vehicle for social change and builds power among girls and transgender youth in Charleston, South Carolina. We develop feminist and anti-racist youth leaders through cultural organizing practices that blend music education, political education, and DIY media making.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.

Programs

  1. Youth Leader Institute (YLI): The Youth Leader Institute aims to equip girls, trans youth and gender nonconforming youth ages 14-18 with the skills, support and critical analysis necessary to lead a movement for radical and lasting change in South Carolina. YLI serves as an organizing crash course, equipping young people with the tools to effectively build and sustain a base of folks who support and are invested in our campaign work. In 2024 CYAP built low-pressure, low-barrier hangout spaces on Discord oriented around gaming, art, music, and topics that were important to youth participants. CYAP continued to maintain its stance of no punishment, no shaming, and no forced participation modeling supportive accountability instead of control. In 2024 CYAP continued leadership development pathways, encouraging youth leaders to find their niche within our or within other organizations as leaders and changemakers. Also in 2024, CYAP built relationships with local organizations, colleges, and youth groups to plan potential collaborative programming.

  2. Jessamine Zine: In 2024,CYAP continued its focus on youth-led liberation, creative education, and community-rooted leadership, with programming centered on consent, boundaries, art-making, and abolitionist political education. Much of this work took shape through the Jessamine Zine initiative, which functioned as a youth-led space for creativity, storytelling, and mutual support. In 2024, CYAP continued its longstanding approach to non-punitive, consent-centered youth work. CYAP created and printed the inaugural zine issues that highlighted youth writing, art, and shared experiences under the umbrella theme of "power." Through the Zine initiative, CYAP helped young people see their work valued in public space via social media and print media.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $8k → $178k.

4 of 15 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 28% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of Carolina Youth Action Project’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 13 of 15 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Carolina Youth Action Project leans on a few funders — its largest provides 36% of grant income and the top three 79%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

64% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Carolina Youth Action Project.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

29% of Carolina Youth Action Project's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 20% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $391k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
