What Boston Casa Inc does
Mission
Boston casa is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to ensure a safe and permanent home for court involved children, who have experienced abuse and neglect, in suffolk and middlesex counties. Boston casa recruits, trains, and supervises volunteers who are appointed by judges to serve as guardians ad litem (gals) to advocate for children and youth most often in the foster care system. Volunteers have legal standing and ensure that their child or sibling group receive the services they are entitled to. Our volunteers not only zealously advocate for these vulnerable children and youth, but also serve as a safe, consistent, and positive presence during what is a very traumatic time in their lives. Through our older youth advocacy project, volunteers support youth ages 16 and older who will or have aged out of the foster care system. They provide these youth with ongoing relational support during this critical time and ensure that the youth receive the necessary resources in order to b
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Program
Boston casa works with some of the most vulnerable individuals in our community: court-involved children in suffolk and middlesex counties who have experienced abuse and neglect. Founded as a state-run program in 1982, boston casa (court appointed special advocates became a nonprofit in 2012 to expand operations through philanthropic support. Since then, it has grown from serving 60 children to over 300 in 2024. More than 80 percent of our children are bipoc, reflecting many of our society's most challenging issues, including domestic violence, substance abuse, poverty, lgbtq discrimination, and racial and social injustices. In fy23, boston casa developed a five-year strategic growth plan to increase the total number of children and youth served in suffolk and middlesex counties from 15 percent to 47 percent by 2028. Boston casa is in the second year of this ambitious plan for growth. In the first year of the plan, boston casa built infrastructure to recruit and train more volunteers and increased fundraising by 25% over fy 23, enabling the addition of staff in january 2025. In fy 24, it surpassed its goal of pairing 100 children with new casas, reaching 108. In fy 25, it set a…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2024 to 2025, from $483k to $1.3M (+161%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2019 21% · 2020 17% · 2021 34% · 2022 22% · 2023 27% · 2024 20% · 2025 17%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
103% of BOSTON CASA INC’s revenue is contributions — more reliant on donations than three-quarters of its peers (97% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 10 funders to 25 funders, grant income rose $165k → $458k.
12 of 60 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 24% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of BOSTON CASA INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 60 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
BOSTON CASA INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 16% of grant income, and it takes 7 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 7 funders to its left
39% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund BOSTON CASA INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 26% · 2018 26% · 2019 30% · 2020 17% · 2021 19% · 2022 24% · 2023 31% — growing more concentrated.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
38% of BOSTON CASA INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 77% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
68% of BOSTON CASA INC's grant income comes from Massachusetts funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $871k arriving through sponsors registered in 10 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
