01What it does

What Bimini Biological Field Station Foundation Inc does

Mission

To advance knowledge of marine animals, especially the heavily impacted sharks and rays; to educate future scientists at the undergraduate and graduate levels; to disseminate our research results to advance the field of marine science; and to promote marine conservation through improved public awareness.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. This year the organization worked tirelessly on the core missions of education, research, and conservation for marine species. The field station hosted approximately 120 students from 10 institutions for weeklong marine science field courses. Additional weeklong programs included the early career workshop which supported scholarships for 13 marine scientists, and educator workshops which supported scholarships for 28 teachers. The research efforts produced valuable scientific outputs. This past year our team contributed to 6 scientific manuscripts that are in stages of review or publication, and 5 scientific presentations. Our data are supporting 10 student led research projects and several other large-scale collaborations. Our conservation efforts engaged with the public to improve overall education regarding marine conservation. We interacted with more than 2,500 people at public events, had 700 guests at the field station, and presented to 2,900 people through digital platforms.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 4 funders, grant income fell $108k → $74k.

3 of 8 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 9% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of BIMINI BIOLOGICAL FIELD STATION FOUNDATION INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

BIMINI BIOLOGICAL FIELD STATION FOUNDATION INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 31% of grant income and the top three 85%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

40% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund BIMINI BIOLOGICAL FIELD STATION FOUNDATION INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

25% of BIMINI BIOLOGICAL FIELD STATION FOUNDATION INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 50% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $36k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
