Program

  1. Billings Food Bank was formed in 1982. Originally designed to serve agencies having food programs, and primarily in Yellowstone County. It has now evolved into a truly independent food bank responding to requests from anywhere throughout the world. If we have the ability to help, we do. In addition to food, we also supply appliances, furniture, equipment, household needs, beds, and mattresses, as available. In the last 40 years we have also established the Fortin Culinary Center where we teach culinary job training skills. We have so far had over 200 graduates of this program with a 99% success rate of placing those individuals in jobs. The demand for people with culinary skills is tremendous. We have a very strict set of rules for our students as there is no charge for the course, but if you dont show up you are not allowed to continue. We have literally changed lives with this program. We are truly proud to have moved many of our students from a generational norm of living on the system, to now being productive members of the work force. Our Fortin Culinary Center has also become a source of revenue and training for our students and others. We have a large reception hall seating…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 7 funders to 12 funders, grant income rose $33k → $194k.

4 of 29 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 24% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $5k from one payer (the payer's own filing calls it a related party, largest Johnson Family Foundation). These are real filings, and they are not money Billings Food Bank Inc raised.

From the IRS filings of Billings Food Bank Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 27 of 29 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

Billings Food Bank Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 25% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

38% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Billings Food Bank Inc.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

57% of Billings Food Bank Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 59% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $283k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
