01What it does

What Aurora Humanitarian Initiative Foundation Inc does

Mission

To support people and promote global projects tackling the needs of the most helpless and destitute Aurora is rooted in the events of the Armenian Genocide one hundred years ago and the enhancement of its position in the world's memory. We will uncover and tell stories of survival and humanity that transpired during the Genocide. In addition, the goal of the Organization is to generate global and local conversations about gratitude; about survivors and saviors from any time and from any place around the world; and about "on the ground" humanitarian projects that make a lasting difference.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Program

  1. The Aurora Humanitarian Initiative is a foundation that seeks to address on-the-ground humanitarian challenges around the world with the focus on helping the most destitute. Its mission is rooted in the Armenian history as the Initiative was founded on behalf of the survivors of the Armenian Genocide and in gratitude to their saviors, and strives to transform this experience into a global movement. See Schedule F for more details.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 9 funders, grant income rose $15k → $11M.

7 of 22 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 86% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of AURORA HUMANITARIAN INITIATIVE FOUNDATION INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

AURORA HUMANITARIAN INITIATIVE FOUNDATION INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 75% of grant income and the top three 90%; half comes from just 1 funder.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left

89% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund AURORA HUMANITARIAN INITIATIVE FOUNDATION INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

86% of AURORA HUMANITARIAN INITIATIVE FOUNDATION INC's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $23M arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
