01What it does

What African Collaborative Inc does

Mission

African collaborative's mission is to provide african-led organizations with vital resources to create purposeful, locally rooted change. We advocate for structural transformation in philanthropy and development to promote equitable funding practices that shift resources to the frontlines of impact.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

On its FY2023 return the organization reported starting a significant new program.

The African Visionary Fund was fiscally sponsored by Myriad USA (formerly KBFUS, King Baudouin Foundation United States) from August 2020 until present. This fiscal sponsorship was structured similar to a Donor-Advised Fund. We are in the process of closing our account with Myriad and plan to close by the end of 2024. All of our income and expenditure that was received and spent by Myriad USA has been reported by Myriad USA in their 990s from 2020 to 2023.

Its own explanation, from Schedule O of that return (Part III, line 2).

  1. While African Visionary Fund continues to strive to achieve their mission, all programatic work in 2023 was through their fiscal sponsor, Myriad USA formerly known as King Baudouin Foundation United States. Almost all programatic revenue and expenses have been recorded and reported by their fiscal sponsor. African Visionary Fund received their 501c3 in 2023, and opened a separate bank account to begin the separation process from the fiscal sponsor. Any revenue or expenses that came into African Visionary Fund's new bank account has been reported on this 990.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

Grant support over time, funder by funder — shade shows the grant size each year.

5 of 15 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 38% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of AFRICAN COLLABORATIVE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

AFRICAN COLLABORATIVE INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 24% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

44% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund AFRICAN COLLABORATIVE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. AFRICAN COLLABORATIVE INC draws 67% of its grant income from funders outside Massachusetts, across 6 states in all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.3M arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

These figures are read directly from IRS Form 990 / 990-PF e-file XML: this organization’s own return for FY2024 (financials across 2023–2024), and the filings of 15 funders that report grants to it. “On record” means captured in the filings we have parsed — a funder that does not e-file, or whose grant detail is not itemized, will not appear. Filings run roughly 12–24 months behind. Trends on this page end at FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving; later years are shown and marked, and move no figure.
