What Youthcast Media Group Inc does
Mission
Youthcast media group (ymg) teaches high school students from under-resourced communities to produce multimedia journalism that highlights solutions to the health, safety, wealth and social disparities where they live. In doing so, they harness the power of their voices to creatively reflect, engage and empower their communities. They also increase their college and career readiness and their agency.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Virtual workshops/boot camps: ymg conducts paid two-week boot camps on introduction to reporting and writing and on social media for journalism, with groups of 12 or more high school students. The reporting and writing "101" boot camp teaches the basics of news writing. Students work in groups to complete short news articles, which we publish on our website and offer to media outlets that have included the dc line and the baltimore afro. Ymg also holds virtual six-week reporting and writing workshops for more experienced student journalists, who write feature articles that have been published by the miami herald, wtop and the philadelphia tribune, among others. In social media training, students learn how to create factual, grammatical and engaging social media posts using canva and capcut video editing software. These are posted on our social channels and are often shared for use by funders and media outlets publishing our articles.
$137,304 spent46% of program spendingIn-school training: ymg instructors conduct virtual and in-person reporting, writing and social media training for high school students during the school day, after school and/or during school vacations. Students are paid for work that meets minimum standards for publication. These articles have run in outlets, including usa today, the washington blade, mindsite news and ffxnow.
$100,804 spent34% of program spendingIndependent content creation: ymg staff and contract journalist-instructors work independently (outside of schools, boot camps and workshops) with high school students and college interns on articles, videos and social media content. Student participants learn interviewing, writing and other useful skills for journalism and other fields, such as caption, headline and pull quote writing, along with social media promotion and graphic design. These articles have run in publications including the providence journal, inside climate news and usa today. Some college interns also learn nonprofit management by working on our operations side. Students in our programs cover the social determinants of health - such as access to safe, affordable housing and healthy food, road safety, personal finance and health equity.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2020, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2020, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2020 to 2021, from $36k to $503k (+1294%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
100% of YOUTHCAST MEDIA GROUP INC’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (82% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 4 funders to 5 funders, grant income fell $751k → $427k.
4 of 12 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 9% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of YOUTHCAST MEDIA GROUP INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
YOUTHCAST MEDIA GROUP INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 33% of grant income and the top three 87%; half comes from just 2 funders.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left
32% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund YOUTHCAST MEDIA GROUP INC.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2020 67% · 2021 60% · 2022 86% · 2023 70% — growing more concentrated.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
25% of YOUTHCAST MEDIA GROUP INC's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 33% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
YOUTHCAST MEDIA GROUP INC draws 99% of its grant income from funders outside Virginia, across 6 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $217k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
