What Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation does
Mission
The Virginia Breast Cancer Foundation (VBCF) empowers Virginians impacted by breast cancer through access, advocacy, education, and community action.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Increase access: Newly established in 2022, VBCF's Screening & Diagnostic Services Fund covers the cost of screening and diagnostic mammograms, ultrasounds, biopsies, and MRIs for Virginians who do not have insurance or cannot afford the out-of-pocket cost in Southwest and Central Virginia. This year VBCF funds provided 1056 screening/diagnostic services for 506 unduplicated patients at six area hospitals. Nine breast cancer diagnoses were made as a result and received timely treatment. Also launched in 2022, our Resource Coordination program helped more than 250 Virginians affected by breast cancer identify and connect to non-medical support resources and distributed more than 330 support kits for the newly diagnosed and metastatic patients, caregivers, and survivor and were semt out in 2025.

With the help of our volunteer network, our Breast Cancer is More Than a Pink Ribbon educational campaign distributed more than 60,000 free English and Spanish Breast Health Basics brochures and door hanger cards in local communities. Our VBCF.org website includes local, state, and national resource links to Find Help; Learn More about VBCF's Programs; and Ways to Take Action, with more than 66,000 unique views to our website this year. VBCF staff and volunteers attended 30 local speaking engagements and hosted educational tables this year sharing breast health information with thousands of attendees.

We offer annual scholarships to train volunteer advocates at national breast cancer conferences. At the state level, VBCF has supported the passage of a state bill to ensure access to diagnostic breast cancer care for state-regulated health insurance plans as well as legislative improvements for prescription affordability, public health access to care and paid medical leave. At the national leave, VBCF supports improvements to federal public health policies, including the Lymphedema Treatment Act, the Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act, and the Dept of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program that has brought $53.4 million to Virginia researchers since 1993.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2017, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2017, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2020 to 2021, from $1.1M to $1.3M (+25%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2021 16% · 2022 12% · 2023 13%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
79% of VIRGINIA BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (82% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 3 funders to 11 funders, grant income rose $6k → $47k.
8 of 24 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 63% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of VIRGINIA BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
VIRGINIA BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 22% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left
86% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund VIRGINIA BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 90% · 2018 62% · 2019 62% · 2020 58% · 2021 57% · 2022 52% · 2023 21% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
40% of VIRGINIA BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 71% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
63% of VIRGINIA BREAST CANCER FOUNDATION's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $118k that is directly attributable, 65% of it comes from funders outside Virginia, across 8 states.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $199k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
