01What it does

What The Old Mutt Hut does

Mission

To create and provide a secure, loving home environment and rest-of-their life care for senior dogs abandoned in shelters.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. In 2025,The Old Mutt Hut sold the sanctuary on 21910 Enoch Road, Calhan, Colorado and with those proceeds purchased a sanctuary house for the dogs at 424 North Walnut Street, Colorado Springs, Colorado to be closer to veterinary care. We needed to escape the ever-present risk of fast-moving wildfires and blizzards! Also during2025 we admitted two senior dogs into the sanctuary and networked (and helped pay medical expenses) 20 senior dogs at risk of euthanasia into new homes. Volunteers donated thousands of hours during 2025 walking and caring for dogs; painting the exterior of the prairie house prior to sale; moving items from the prairie home to the town home avoiding hiring a moving company; and cleaning and painting the new sanctuary house. Volunteers helped conduct one yard sale and two online auctions to raise funds and increase our public profile.

Each line starts at 100 in 2018, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2018, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $1k → $8k.

4 of 10 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 60% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE OLD MUTT HUT’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE OLD MUTT HUT leans on a few funders — its largest provides 32% of grant income and the top three 70%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

60% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE OLD MUTT HUT.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

75% of THE OLD MUTT HUT's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 50% give in more than one year at all.

first grant+1y+2y

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

60% of THE OLD MUTT HUT's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $25k that is directly attributable, 100% of it comes from funders outside Colorado, across 6 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $38k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
