What The Green Mountain Club Inc Debonis does

Mission

The mission of the green mountain club is to make the vermont mountains play a larger part in the life of the people by protecting and maintaining the long trail system and fostering, through education, the stewardship of vermont's hiking trails and mountains.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Field programs: the green mountain club works to conserve, protect, and ensure the continued viability of the long trail, the appalachian trail in vermont, and northeast kingdon trails. Operations are in place to develop and maintain the trails, shelters and structures that are a part of the club's trail system. Gmc had caretakers placed across vermont who educated the public on low-impact hiking and camping techniques and managed use at mountain sites and ponds in vermont's backcountry. Land conservation: the green mountain club is committed to protecting the trail corridor and works with local agency partners to conserve land surrounding our trail management system. We utilize the work of volunteers to monitor our corridors, which involves regularly walking protected lands to ensure that conservation restrictions are being upheld and the long trail system is protected. We also maintain open areas, which has goals of maintaining the agricultural character of the region, suppressing invasive species, and providing meadow environments for wildlife. 03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 18 funders to 30 funders, grant income rose $80k → $317k.

11 of 75 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 63% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE GREEN MOUNTAIN CLUB INC DEBONIS’s funders (the co-funder graph). Top 30 of 75 funders by total. Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE GREEN MOUNTAIN CLUB INC DEBONIS has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 33% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

67% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE GREEN MOUNTAIN CLUB INC DEBONIS.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. How long its funders stay

54% of THE GREEN MOUNTAIN CLUB INC DEBONIS's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 59% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Where its funders are

63% of THE GREEN MOUNTAIN CLUB INC DEBONIS's grant income arrives through donor-advised or pass-through sponsors, whose addresses record where the money is held rather than where the donor is. Of the $1.0M that is directly attributable, 88% of it comes from funders outside Vermont, across 18 states.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $1.7M arriving through sponsors registered in 11 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
