01What it does

What The Firehouse Community Arts Center LLC does

Mission

The firehouse is a creative learning space in the avondale neighborhood of birmingham, alabama dedicated to the enrichment of the city's musical community. We offer a variety of music education programs, with scholarship opportunities for the musically-underserved students in the community, as well as sustainable employment for birmingham's working musicians

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Currently the firehouse teaches 106 young people (ages 5-18) one on one music lessons in guitar, bass guitar, piano, and drums. During 2024, 37 young people received scholarships and learned at a reduced cost, and ten learned at no cost. In 2024, the firehouse provided 3,303 total music lessons. Of those, 964 lessons were provided either at no charge or at a reduced cost to the client. The value of scholarships given was approximately $33,400 in 2024. The lesson program is central to the firehouse's mission and accounts for more than 60% of the organization's income and expenses.

  2. As an approved strategic partner of the birmingham city schools and the avondale elementary pta, the firehouse offered intersession music education programs and an after-school music club for 4th and 5th grade students at avondale elementary. Using an interest-based approach, firehouse teaching artists taught groups of up to 25 students guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. Participants chose and performed songs as a group at three school assemblies. The program aims to promote confidence, to create positive behaviors, to improve student success, and to increase awareness of the firehouse's programs and scholarships.

  3. The firehouse partnered with knowledge, rhythm, and understanding (kru), a nonprofit hip hop education program to host more than 25 after-school pizza parties. During each session, the firehouse and kru welcomed young people and families from avondale and surrounding areas to learn the core elements of hip hop: rapping and lyric-writing, beat-making, and break dancing. Additionally, participants had access to learn and explore guitar, bass, and drums under the guidance of firehouse teaching artists. Post office pies and davenport's provided pizza, and buffalo rock bottling co provided the drinks. This program was supported in part by the alabama state council on the arts.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2020 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 6 funders, grant income rose $5k → $27k.

2 of 7 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 32% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of THE FIREHOUSE COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER LLC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

THE FIREHOUSE COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER LLC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 32% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

32% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund THE FIREHOUSE COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER LLC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $33k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
