What Tennessee Kidney Foundation Inc does
Mission
To empower and support those at risk or affected by kidney disease. Its vision is a Tennessee where the rate of kidney disease is minimized and everyone who needs care receives care.
As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.
Programs
Transportation and Emergency Assistance - provides a lifeline for very low-income individuals with End Stage Renal Disease who cannot afford the cost of transportation to and from life-sustaining dialysis appointments. TKF is the only organization providing transportation assistance for dialysis patients and transplant candidates in Middle Tennessee and funded more than 70,000 trips in 2023-2024 year. Also, the emergency assistance program aids individuals who are facing the termination of utilities, eviction from housing, and depleted food supplies which are essential to kidney health. The program provides relief in times of crisis that allows individuals to plan and save for the following months and concentrate on their health outcomes. Also, TKF addresses food security concerns and adherence to kidney-related diet for low-income kidney patients by providing fresh, kidney-friendly meals delivered to their homes at no cost to participants. TKF provided 1,820 meals in 2023-2024.
$472,539 spent76% of program spendingPreventive services and Community Education - provides free prevention kidney health screenings throughout Middle Tennessee at workplaces, churches, community health fairs and other places it can reach individuals who are most at risk for kidney disease. A kidney health screening includes a medical history questionnaire, blood pressure reading, height and weight measurements, and a urinalysis. Every participant talks one-on-one with a physician or health educator to understand their results, possible risks and action steps. TKF provides exhibits at community events and public education presentations at workplaces, churches, health fairs and civic groups to educate the community about kidney disease and identifying possible risk factors. TKF developed a curriculum for a virtual/online kidney health screening and education program in 2020-2021 in response to COVID-19 safety precaution restrictions on in person events, and plans to continue offering these online programs as a complement to in person screenings in the future.
$77,103 spent12% of program spendingProfessional Education - provides administrative support related to the coordination of transportation, community education and prevention program services. TKF participates in and hosts professional education events alongside kidney health professionals to maintain the most current level of knowledge about kidney health trends. TKF offers education and prevention programming through free in-person kidney screenings and outreach events. Each screening consists of a urinalysis, blood pressure reading, and height and weight calculations. Screenings help identify health issues such as hypertension and diabetes that can lead to CKD and ESKD. Medical Professionals are on-site to offer education and resources and encourage participants to seek follow-up care. Many attendees of TKF screenings do not participate in regular doctor visits, have limited knowledge of their health status, and often do not know their numbers. These screening events provide life-saving information. In the past year, TKF has held seven screenings throughout our 42-county service area with over 150 individuals screened in total. Of those, 70% of our participants had abnormal results (the result of an elevated…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2019, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2019, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $780k to $537k (−31%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2020 14% · 2021 17% · 2022 13% · 2023 19% · 2024 18% · 2025 41%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
61% of Tennessee Kidney Foundation Inc’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (87% for the typical peer).

Who funds it, year by year
2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 10 funders to 12 funders, grant income rose $77k → $114k.
7 of 27 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 33% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of Tennessee Kidney Foundation Inc’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
Tennessee Kidney Foundation Inc has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 20% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left
74% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund Tennessee Kidney Foundation Inc.
Largest funder’s share by year: 2017 41% · 2018 31% · 2019 33% · 2020 21% · 2021 25% · 2022 28% · 2023 26% — diversifying over time.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How long its funders stay
53% of Tennessee Kidney Foundation Inc's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 59% give in more than one year at all.
Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.
Where its funders are
84% of Tennessee Kidney Foundation Inc's grant income comes from Tennessee funders.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $361k arriving through sponsors registered in 7 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
