01What it does

What Teche Project does

Mission

Work to enhance the ecology of the bayou teche watershed. To encourage recreational use of bayou teche by building a first class paddle trail with access docks in all fifteen towns along the bayou. To work with local governments to promote trail based tourism and ecologically sustainable development along the bayou teche corridor

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Promoted the culture and history of bayou teche: the Teche Project hosted the 13th annual shake your trail feather paddle parade and festival with over 250 attendees enjoying the live music and paddle excursion. We also hosted our annual membership event "twilight on the teche" in arnaudville at maison stephanie with over 110 attendees. A cultural presentation pertaining to the history of the manor house and the renovation work was given. In 2025, we embarked on a new oral history initiative to gather stories about current and past life experiences. We plan to publish these stories on our website and in other media outlets in the furure. Also in 2025, we partnered with the center for la studies and the william g. Pomeroy foundation to install a "legends and lore" marker about pirate jean lafitte's contraband tunnel under the mt. Carmel academy in new iberia. Each year, we also attend several outreach events with partner groups to share our mission to embrace the cultural values of the bayou teche corridor.

  2. Enhancing the ecology of Bayou Teche: We took part in the spring Love the Boot campaign by cleaning trailhead parks at our dock sites. We also hosted a clean-up day in New Iberia in the spring and periodically pulled trash with boats to account for 61 tons of trash in the past 15 years. We provided guidance to interested parties regarding wood duck nest box management. We have 63 participants in our program to rear ducks along the bayou and are hatching over 750 ducklings annually. Director, Patti Holland spoke on the values of bank-line restoration as a measure to improve water quality to the Vermilion River Water Quality Task Force. We also recorded 10 segments about Bayou Teche flora and fauna for KRVS Public Radio's "Nature in Acadiana" program.

  3. Encouraging Recreational Use on Bayou Teche: The Bayou Teche National Paddle Trail infrastructure was completed in 2023, however, we continue our work to add features to improve paddle trail usage into the future. With installation work completed, we have shifted our focus to paddle trail promotion and hosting events to get people on Bayou Teche. In 2025, we worked with parish and state tourism offices to film our annual paddle parade as promotion of the Bayou Teche National Paddle Trail. We continue to promote the national paddle trail on our website via our Paddle Trail Guide for 1 to 3-day excursions and on the national trail finder platform, ALLTrails. In 2025, we worked with a local outfitter, Wanderlust Rentals to get a passive kayak kiosk rental station installed at the New Iberia paddle trail dock site. We also worked with landowners to facilitate more camping opportunities along Bayou Teche. In June 2025, we held our 3rd youth workshop "Geaux Paddle" aimed at getting youths ages 10 to 14 paddling on Bayou Teche and learning about the ecological and recreational values of the bayou. We plan to continue that workshop each summer.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 5 funders, grant income rose $8k → $13k.

2 of 11 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 14% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of TECHE PROJECT’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

TECHE PROJECT has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 24% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

57% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund TECHE PROJECT.

Largest funder’s share by year: 2019 100% · 2020 95% · 2021 66% · 2022 79% · 2023 80% — diversifying over time.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

50% of TECHE PROJECT's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 36% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Louisiana out of state home

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $6k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
