What South End Neighborhood Tutors Inc does

Mission

Connecting elementary school children with caring and dedicated tutors, WIZARD'S WARDROBE'S ONE-TO-ONE TUTORING PROGRAM ENHANCES LITERACY, FOSTERS CREATIVITY AND SUPPLEMENTS CLASSROOM LEARNING IN ALBANY'S SOUTH END.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Wizard's wardrobe is a free after-school one-to-one literacy tutoring program for elementary school children in albany's south end neighborhood. We pair a struggling reader with a well-trained, caring tutor who has the complete flexibility to tailor instruction to fit the learning style of their student. Our tutors are volunteers who are vetted and undergo 13 hours of initial training plus continuous supplemental training. Tutors meet with their students for two 90-minute sessions per week during the school year. Tutors work on strengthening reading, writing and problem-solving skills with a wide variety of high-quality instructional materials. Our program is quantifiably effective. None of our students read at grade level when they come to us. After one year in the program, 30% are reading on grade level. After two years, 60% are reading at at grade level. We are continuously working to expand and improve our program. For the last four years, we have fielded an odyssey of the mind (om) team comprised of wizard's wardrobe students. Om is an international competition that fosters the development of creative problem-solving skills team-based challenges. The program requires…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $5k → $6k.

3 of 9 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 46% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 35% of grant income and the top three 69%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

69% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SOUTH END NEIGHBORHOOD TUTORS INC.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $30k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
