01What it does

What Sophie's Circle Inc does

Mission

Sophies circle provides pet food to financially challenged families in an ongoing effort to keep pets in their homes. We also rescue, rehabilitiate and rehome dogs and cats in private foster homes until we find them their forever home.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Animal rescue - animals are taken in from high kill shelters, owner surrenders or are brought in as strays. Animals are immediately sent to a vet and evaluated. Medical needs are addressed and protocol is that every animal that comes into our rescue is spayed or neutered. They are all brought up to date on shots and if they are heartworm positive, they are treated. Any other medical issues are addressed and treated. Once the animal is vetted, they go to an approved foster home where they stay until we find them an approved new home. All applications are reviewed by our volunteers, references are checked and homes are inspected. The new adopter signs a contract with us and a stipulation of the contract is that the animal must be returned to our rescue if for any reason it doesn't work out. There is no time limit on that stipulation. We stay in contact with our adoptive families to make sure the relationship is successful.

  2. Food pantry - as the only pet food pantry in volusia, we provide pet food to financially challenged families at various locations on a weekly basis. Financial hardship must be proven when a new family signs up for the program and proof of spay/neuter for each animal receiving food must be provided. Once the family has qualified, they receive a card and each time they receive food the card is marked with the date. Cards are not transferrable and no one is allowed to pick up for anyone else.

  3. Adoption - applicants fill out an adoption application which is reviewed by our volunteers. All references are checked and homes are visited and inspected. We check the 'do not adopt' lists and we make sure it will be a good match based on what we know about the dog being chosen. A contract is signed once the animal goes to their new home and one of the stipulations is the animal must be returned to our rescue if it doesn't work out for any reason. Our adoption fees are 50 to 200 based on age and special needs.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 6 funders to 8 funders, grant income rose $17k → $195k.

4 of 16 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 41% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SOPHIE'S CIRCLE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SOPHIE'S CIRCLE INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 26% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

53% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SOPHIE'S CIRCLE INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $171k arriving through sponsors registered in 4 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
