01What it does

What Somerset Woods Trustees does

Mission

To conserve lands with significant ecological or cultural resources and manage them in a sustainable way for public benefit.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. LAND ACQUISITION: In 2024, Somerset Woods Trustees completed three conservation acquisitions, resulting in the permanent preservation of high-value plant and wildlife habitat, water access, and recreational opportunities. Project highlights include the Carrabassett Islands/McLean Woods acquisitions, conserving one of the most biodiverse river segments on the Carrabassett River in Embden and Anson, home to at least 4 Rare, Threatened and Special Concern species; and Larone Woods featuring unmanaged forest and recreational trails along Martin Stream, a brook trout and salmon waterway. Combined, these projects protect more than 2 miles of shoreline and the first publicly accessible conservation land in Anson.

  2. LAND STEWARDSHIP: In 2024, Somerset Woods partnered with Pierce Pond Watershed Trust to increase our respective stewardship capacity with the addition of a full-time staff position. This new position implemented a trail rehabilitation project at Wesserunsett Stream Preserve, improving the sustainability and accessibility of more than 2 miles of walking trails, and enhanced public use infrastructure at Parsons Family Preserve to facilitate increased visitation and engagement in the long-term habitat restoration project underway on this in-town property. Invasive plant surveys were completed on three parcels, resulting in comprehensive management plans for the long-term protection of native biodiversity and enhanced forest health. A new non-motorized trail network was established at our flagship property, Parkman Hill Farm.

  3. EDUCATION & OUTREACH: Somerset Woods engaged with community members through monthly programs, educational events, and an e-newsletter all designed to raise awareness of and appreciation for the natural world. More than 100 local K-12 students participated in volunteer sessions and educational programs facilitated by land trust staff and volunteers. In partnership with Skowhegan Area High School, Somerset Woods hosted two Horticultural Apprentices high school students who learned native plant cultivation skills while supporting our habitat restoration activities at Parsons Family Preserve. At the end of the year-long apprenticeship, the students earned a microcredential for their high school transcripts.

  4. SOMERSET WOODS SHARE: Piloted in 2024, this program provides emergency heating assistance to community members in need. We function much like a food pantry - but with firewood rather than food. In this pilot year, staff and volunteers sourced 10 cords of firewood from our stewardship activity on our conserved lands. Staff harvested or salvaged the trees, and volunteers took the lead in firewood processing and distribution. A wood splitter was acquired in September to lessen our reliance upon volunteers in-kind equipment and increase our wood-processing capacity.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 2 funders, grant income rose $5k → $50k.

5 of 17 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 47% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SOMERSET WOODS TRUSTEES’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SOMERSET WOODS TRUSTEES leans on a few funders — its largest provides 38% of grant income and the top three 65%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

79% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SOMERSET WOODS TRUSTEES.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. 14% of SOMERSET WOODS TRUSTEES's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 35% give in more than one year at all.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $287k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
