01What it does

What Scandia Heritage Alliance does

Mission

To preserve and celebrate scandia, minnesota's rich history, culture, arts and rural character.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Restoration of the historic scandia water tower barn and creation of an arts & heritage center that includes the water tower barn museum, an amphitheater, wetland trails and overlook, a water play area, and a summer caf featuring traditional swedish fare. Costs incurred for this program have been capitalized as part of the water tower barn development and not expensed.

  2. Development of a scandia heritage trail, map, and interpretive signage that tells the history of scandia's historic sites. This map is available for free at many locations throughout the scandia community including the scandia community center and gammelgarden museum.

  3. Scandia history series programs - Scandia Heritage Alliance joined in partnership with gammelgrden museum and the city of scandia to expand scandia vinterfest in january with free family activities in events sponsored by sha in 2024 included: historic ice harvesting, meeting a sled dog team, a kubb tournament , meeting raptors from the wildlife science center and a goosechase trivia treasure hunt. In april, an audience of over 100 guests stepped back in time with architectural historian charlene roise to discover reasons behind the unique design of scandia's water tower barn that once stood behind the scandia mercantile. Using a 1905 aermotor manual as a guide, charlene studied the windmill remnants that remained in the building and unraveled the mystery behind a double outer wall on the tower, beefy windmill supports, and water tank design. In june, participants discovered the intriguing stories of knapp's cave, cedar bend swing bridge, and log house landing on this paddle / hike adventure that started at osceola landing and continued to log house landing in scandia. The tour included a short (but rigorous) hike to knapp's cave to hear its vibrant history.knapps cave is the…

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $1k → $212k.

2 of 9 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 6% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of SCANDIA HERITAGE ALLIANCE’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

SCANDIA HERITAGE ALLIANCE leans on a few funders — its largest provides 38% of grant income and the top three 88%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

26% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund SCANDIA HERITAGE ALLIANCE.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

80% of SCANDIA HERITAGE ALLIANCE's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 56% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $31k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
