01What it does

What Restless Books Inc does

Mission

Restless books is an independent, nonprofit publisher devoted to championing essential voices from around the world, whose stories speak to us across linguistic and cultural borders. We seek extraordinary international literature that feeds our restlessness: our hunger for new perspectives, passion for other cultures and languages, and eagerness to explore beyond the confines of the familiar. Our books-fiction, narrative nonfiction, journalism, memoirs, travel writing, and young people's literature-offer readers an expanded understanding of a changing world.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Restless books is devoted to championing essential voices from around the world. In 2024 we published 12 books. Four were for young readers, eleven were in translation, ten of the twelve were published for the first time and the remaining titles were new editions of an existing work. As of the end of 2024 we have over 160 titles in print and electric form, sold across the country and internationally via retail bookstores, on the web, including from our own website, and by our distributor, publishers group west. Our authors come from all over the world and represent almost 50 countries of origin and 30 languages. In addition to our publishing program we run the kellman prize or immigrant literature, which awards a writing residency from millay arts and $10,000 and publication with restless books to a writer who has produced a work that addresses the effects of global migration on identity. We also run writing workshops centered on immigration experiences.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2018 → 2023: the base broadened from 1 funder to 4 funders, grant income rose $6k → $31k.

5 of 13 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 47% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of RESTLESS BOOKS INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

RESTLESS BOOKS INC has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 18% of grant income, and it takes 4 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 4 funders to its left

79% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund RESTLESS BOOKS INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

25% of RESTLESS BOOKS INC's funders are still giving 2 years after their first grant; 38% give in more than one year at all.

first grant+1y+2y

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $111k arriving through sponsors registered in 5 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
