What Grid Books Inc does
Mission
The mission of grid books is to publish the creative work of underrepresented writers, to encourage and support the creation of such work, and in doing so, to educate the public through exposure to diversity of voices and perspectives.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.
Programs
Each year 3-5 books are selected from open reading periods. Grid books publishes a variety of perspectives expressed across genres, with a focus on projects generated through intergenerational exchange such as those encompassing oral history and collaborations between students and their teachers. Approximately 5 authors per year are served through this program.
$37,750 spent100% of program spendingGrid books also administers the off the grid prize, granted annually to one poet over 60 whose writing practice is ongoing and whose vision is fresh while drawing from six or more decades of lived experience. In recent years grid books has found ways to expand participation in, and representation within, the contest: when participants cannot afford the reading fee, it's readily waived; manuscripts are considered by a diverse team of screeners, and engage judges whose work represents the caliber of writing, and diversity of perspective, that we aim to publish in this series. Approximately 700 poets are reached annually through this program.
$0 spent0% of program spendingGrid books promotes engagement with literature by connecting authors to a wider and more culturally, geographically, and economically diverse audience. It's done by producing quality books that are accessible to as large a readership as possible. For example, during the pandemic, it was discovered grid books was able to reach individuals for whom in-person events are not manageable due to physical or geographical limitations. An audiobook list was launched that expanded our reach to include individuals whose engagement with poetry extends beyond the printed page. An audience of approximately 2,000 each year are served through our audio programming.

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2022, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2022, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2023 to 2024, from $67k to $100k (+49%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
Government-grant reliance: 2022 5%. Grants only. Government contracts and fees sit inside program revenue.
85% of GRID BOOKS INC’s revenue is contributions — more donation-reliant than the typical peer (78% for the typical peer).
