What Pricing Carbon Initiative Inc does
Mission
The mission of Pricing Carbon Initiative (PCI) is to share information and foster dialogue among its diverse network of stakeholders who are committed to addressing the global disruptions and existential threats of climate change. The focus is on effective approaches to carbon pricing policies that are viable, equitable, and commensurate with the challenges of addressing this ever-worsening crisis. To this end, PCI engages members of its network in a series of meetings that are either in-person/virtual hybrids, or just virtual. They include: A) PCI's unique confidential (Chatham House Rule) Pricing Carbon Dialogues, restricted to network members; B) virtual public forums that are posted and open to all; C) invitation-only workshops that focus on specific carbon pricing issues. PCI also participates in climate-related symposia sponsored by other organizations, in college classrooms as a guest lecturer, and disseminates information and viewpoints on climate policy through its website.
As stated on its FY2024 Form 990-EZ.
Program
The Pricing Carbon Initiative (PCI) convenes regularly scheduled in-person and virtual meetings to discuss a range of potential climate-change policies that include pricing carbon as a key ingredient. The network currently includes over 125 stakeholders representing environmental, business, labor, social justice, religious, and other issue-oriented advocacy organizations, as well as both conservative and progressive think tanks. It is not a coalition that unites around specific policy proposals. Instead of advocating for proscriptive solutions, PCI aims to spark transformative insights within its network on how best to facilitate bipartisan strategies to achieve reductions in carbon emissions, while addressing both equity and effectiveness issues. PCI's diverse participants agree to three basic principles: 1) climate change is a serious existential threat to a healthy planet, 2) pricing is a necessary ingredient for effective policies and 3) participants in the Pricing Carbon Dialogues will adhere to the Chatham House Rule (CHR) of confidentiality. This CHR protocol has infused the PCI discussions with a sense of bipartisan candor, trust and cordiality that participants value and…

The organization over time
Each line starts at 100 in 2021, so what you read is the shape rather than the size: 150 means half as much again as 2021, 50 means half. The number beside each label in the key is where it ended. The shaded band is where the middle 50% of its peers' revenue would sit, given their growth.
Balance sheet
Total assets and total liabilities at each year end, in dollars. The largest one-year move in total assets was 2021 to 2022, from $3k to $52k (+1966%).
How it's funded, over time
Each bar is one year's revenue split into where it came from, and every bar is the same height — these are shares, not amounts, so a year that raised twice as much looks the same size. Hover a bar for the split.
85% of PRICING CARBON INITIATIVE INC’s revenue is contributions — about as donation-reliant as the typical peer (88% for the typical peer).
Surplus & reserves

Who funds it, year by year
2018 → 2023: the base held at 1 funder, grant income rose $10k → $40k.
3 of 5 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 11% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
From the IRS filings of PRICING CARBON INITIATIVE INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
How concentrated its funding is
PRICING CARBON INITIATIVE INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 69% of grant income and the top three 98%; half comes from just 1 funder.
the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 1 funder to its left
Largest funder’s share by year: 2018 100% · 2020 100% · 2021 100% · 2022 100% · 2023 100% — broadly stable.
“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
Where its funders are
PRICING CARBON INITIATIVE INC draws 100% of its grant income from funders outside Massachusetts, across 2 states in all.
In-state vs out-of-state, by year
Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $32k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.
