01What it does

What Climate Change Ai does

Mission

To catalyze impactful work at the intersection of climate change and machine learning.

As stated on its FY2024 Form 990.

Programs

  1. Artificial intelligence (ai) and machine learning (ml) offer a powerful suite of tools to accelerate climate change mitigation and adaptation across different sectors. However, gaps in data, funding, and partnership-building infrastructure often hinder the impactful use of ai/ml for climate change applications. Climate Change Ai has developed several resources geared towards addressing these challenges by (a) cataloging critical data gaps that impede ai/ml applications in addressing climate change, and surfacing them publicly via a data gaps tool, in order to mobilize efforts to fill these data gaps, (b) conducting research on the role of funding mechanisms such as grand challenges, culminating in a publicly-available report, andsee continuation on schedule o.

  2. Ccai's conferences and events promote education, networking, and knowledge sharing. In 2024, we organized one-day workshops at top ai and machine learning venues (amld 2024, iclr 2024, and neurips 2024); these workshops drew several hundreds of participants, and collectively featured almost 200 accepted research papers. Ccai also organized two events at climate week nyc, and one event at the un climate change conference, aimed at mobilizing and building connections between academic, industry, and policy audiences.

  3. The Climate Change Ai summer school is designed to educate and prepare participants with a background in artificial intelligence ai and/or a background in a climate change related field to tackle major climate problems using ai. Our 2023 and 2024 editions consisted of two independent components - an open to all virtual program (which in total drew 16k registered participants across both editions) and a selective in-person program (which has hosted approximately 60 participants across both editions). Courses were conducted by members of Climate Change Ai and world-renowned experts in ai and climate change.

  4. Ccai's innovation grants program awards seed grants supporting research, deployment, and the creation of datasets and tools. This innovation grants program also enables the creation of key partnerships that accelerate the research-to-deployment cycle, creating synergies between academic researchers, non-profits, startups and other companies, and governmental or intergovernmental organizations. In 2024, we continued supporting our 2022 and 2023 grantees, as well as selecting a cohort of approximately 10 new 2024 grantees. This program was run in partnership with future earth (with Climate Change Ai leading the call design, grant review and selection, and post-award grantee support, and with future earth disseminating grant funding).

1 of 2 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 13% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.
