01What it does

What Play Like a Champion Today Educational Series Inc does

Mission

Play like a champion provides leadership in a national effort to promote an inclusive, developmentally oriented youth sports culture for all children. It does this in two ways. It partners with economically disadvantaged communities lacking infrastructure and funding by providing project management and organizational development consulting to build community youth sports organizations to sustain youth sports programming. Secondly, it educates sports leaders, coaches, parents and administrators through its train the trainer model.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Program

  1. Coach and parent training: play like a champion trained 6,040 coaches and 8,432 parents during fye 2025. The increase is due to partner growth and virtual training workshops. The organization is expanding its project management and organizational development work under the banner of "a team for every child", supporting socio-economically challenged neighborhoods that are facing declining funding for their programs. Play like a champion has projects in chicago and south bend, indiana. The annual conference continues to bring partners together across the country to provide continuing education and reaffirm our shared values and commitment.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2019 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 5 funders, grant income rose $13k → $27k.

2 of 9 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 3% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

From the IRS filings of PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY EDUCATIONAL SERIES INC’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY EDUCATIONAL SERIES INC leans on a few funders — its largest provides 47% of grant income and the top three 83%; half comes from just 2 funders.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 2 funders to its left

77% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION TODAY EDUCATIONAL SERIES INC.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $5k arriving through sponsors registered in 2 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
