Mission

The mission of the Pennsylvania Friends of Agriculture Foundation is to preserve and promote agriculture-the largest of the commonwealth's industries.

As stated on its FY2025 Form 990.

Programs

  1. The mobile agriculture education science lab is available for schools to increase student awareness about the importance of agriculture in their daily lives. The mobile science lab provided agriculture education to 158 schools during the fiscal year.

$578,798 spent$319,409 earned by the program
    68% of program spending
  2. The ag-in-the-classroom teacher workshop is a one-week course to educate teachers (k-12) how food moves from the source to the customer. Teachers then use their personal experiences and information they have received to integrate agriculture into their curriculum. Ag-in-the-classroom educated 31 teachers during the fiscal year.

$125,358 spent$35,375 earned by the program

  3. Usda outreach and education initiative will promote agriculture enterprise development, expansion, and sustainability among veteran farmers throughout pennsylvania. Foa has partnered with the pa veteran farming project on this three-year project. The project will engage and empower beginning and future farmers who are veterans, equipping them with tools to build profitable and sustainable agribusinesses in the commonwealth. Through resource referral, education, and mentoring, our target audience will: (1) gain awareness and understanding of usda and other federal, state, and local resources and programming; (2) learn to navigate and access the sometimes-confusing web of technical assistance available locally and regionally; (3) improve their understanding of, and successfully obtain, financial resources such as grants, loans, and cost share program funding. (4) convene annual statewide veteran farming summits, host 5 workshops throughout pennsylvania each of the three years and create a veteran-to-veteran mentoring program, ag allies. The project will reach a minimum of 300 eligible veterans resulting in at least 24 new farms as a result of grant activities.

03Who funds it

Who funds it, year by year

2017 → 2023: the base broadened from 2 funders to 8 funders, grant income rose $20k → $150k.

7 of 20 of your funders are donor-advised or pass-through sponsors (tagged DAF) — 19% of grant dollars received. That money is really individual donors directing a sponsor; the institutions to cultivate are the non-DAF funders.

Left out of every figure on this page: $452k from 2 payers (the payer shares this organization's board, largest Pennsylvania Farm Bureau). These are real filings, and they are not money PENNSYLVANIA FRIENDS OF AGRICULTURE FOUNDATION raised.

From the IRS filings of PENNSYLVANIA FRIENDS OF AGRICULTURE FOUNDATION’s funders (the co-funder graph). Association, not causation. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How concentrated its funding is

PENNSYLVANIA FRIENDS OF AGRICULTURE FOUNDATION has a broad base — no single funder exceeds 33% of grant income, and it takes 3 funders to reach half.

the vertical line marks half of all grant income — 3 funders to its left

54% of the income these shares are computed over arrives through pass-through sponsors or from payers whose filings do not say what kind of payment it is. Concentration is still measured over all of it, because the money is real; what it does not support is a claim about how many institutions have chosen to fund PENNSYLVANIA FRIENDS OF AGRICULTURE FOUNDATION.

“Effective funders” = inverse Herfindahl index (1 / Σ shareᵢ²) — the number of equal-sized funders that would give the same concentration. Trends are read to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving. FY2024–FY2026 are still being filed and are shown unshaded; they do not move any figure on this page.

How long its funders stay

50% of PENNSYLVANIA FRIENDS OF AGRICULTURE FOUNDATION's funders are still giving 3 years after their first grant; 60% give in more than one year at all.

Share of funders still giving k years after their first recorded grant, pooled across every acquisition cohort. A funder counts as retained in a year only if it made a grant that year. Measured to FY2023, the last fiscal year that has finished arriving — a funder cannot be counted as lapsed in a year most filers have not reached.

Funder states come from each funder’s own filing. $130k arriving through sponsors registered in 3 states is excluded from the map and the split above: a sponsor holds money on a donor’s behalf, so its registered address would place those dollars somewhere no donor need ever have been.
